Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN)

Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN)

ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) is a digital telephone and Data communication service that offers two major benefits over normal analogue lines on the PSTN platform, instead of one analogue line. ISDN technology provides at least two digital lines over a normal copper wire and, because it is a digital service, both lines can transmit data at 64 Kbps. ISDN offers speed up to 2mbps.

With ISDN, customers can continue to make normal telephone and fax calls as they add fast
Internet access, Intranet, e-mail, video conferencing and LAN communication to their business.
Whereas for the analog PSTN technology, it only allow for Voice service and process one service at a time with slow speed, at less better quality.

ISDN services come in two types:
(1) Basic Rate (BR) with 2 virtual digital lines, and
(2) Primary Rate (TR) with 30 digital lines or 2Mbps Data rate.
An ISDN Primary Rate service, available in increments of 30 digital lines per Primary Rate, is perfect for customers wanting to connect PABXs or transmit and receive data at speeds from 64 Kbps to 2 Mbps or combinations of the two.

ISDN is not simply a point-to-point solution like a leased line. ISDN networks extend from the local telephone exchange to the remote user and includes all of the telecommunications and switching equipment in between.
