A much faster communications
The newly commissioned APNG-2 cable is set to greatly revolutionize the information dissemination in Papua New Guinea from now on and into the future. The new link will greatly improve voice and data communications including internet access by a factor of about seventy times at reduced costs.
Technicalities
The cable which terminates at Ela Beach exchange in Port Moresby has a total capacity of 1120 Mbps. A capacity of 45Mbps of this total has been reserved for the Telikom Gateway Internet Traffic. This is a big improvement by a factor of 7 from the previous 6Mbps link. Because of this, internet access around the country is expected to be a lot faster. The rest of the cable capacity is for lease to customers who want to have their voice and data traffics piped overseas, through this new improved link. Several major mining companies operating in PNG have shown very strong interest in buying capacity in APNG-2. They prefer the cable to satellite which normally causes delays in voice and impedes high performance to high speed data services including internet.
